The millennial government will be a solitary unified government that rules over all the earth.
No longer will Israel be divided as they have been for so long. They will be united and will also be constantly working to bring unity to all nations. And though from time to time disunity will spring up, overall, a unified government (with the Jews in charge) will be wonderfully realized. As Dwight Pentecost has stated, “The ‘world government’ coveted by men as the answer to international strife will have been realized (Ezek. 37:13-28).”
When you think about it, I don’t think it will be as difficult to unify the world as you may think—at least at first. For when the kingdom begins all unbelievers will be dead, and those remaining will be eager to serve the King. Thus, at the beginning of the kingdom, all institutions and positions of authority will be taken over by believers. As Daniel 7: 27 states,
‘Then the sovereignty, the dominion, and the greatness of all the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the Highest One; His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all the dominions will serve and obey Him.’
I can’t help feeling that at the beginning of the millennium the whole world will be as one happy family, with Jesus as our Father. And I think that, though Christ will be the ruler over all, all believers will take ownership of the government. They, after all, will be led by the Holy Spirit—much like the church is today.
The millennial government will be a strong government that protects and keeps peace.
If you were to ask anyone today what makes a strong government and a strong nation, a big part of the answer would have to do with having a strong military. No government today can be strong and able to protect its people without a strong military presence. But in the millennium there will no longer be any weapons of war. All wars will be a thing of the past (Is. 2:4). So how can there possibly be a strong government in the millennium that will protect people and keep peace without weapons of war?
Well, the only answer I can think of is that it will be done through the supernatural power of God—through various avenues. Of course Christ will need only to speak a word and whatever He wants done will be done. And I think many miracles will also be done by all the glorified ones and possibly by many spirit-filled mortals. Yes, it will be an era of miracles like we have never seen before. The power of the Holy Spirit will be everywhere keeping peace over the earth. Sinners who rebel won’t stand a chance. Their evil plans will be crushed before they even get started. As Isaiah says in Isaiah 29:20, “For the ruthless will come to an end, and the scorner will be finished, indeed all who are intent on doing evil will be cut off…”
Again, Psalm 2:9 says,
“Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron,
Thou shalt shatter them like earthenware.”
We don’t know every means the Lord will use to keep sinners in line and keep the peace, but I imagine that just as in the Old Testament, He will use nature as His instrument (read Zech. 14:16-18). And of course, the strength of government to protect and keep peace will not only be a force to protect from evil; it will also be an instrument to teach righteousness—because peace will not be established without righteousness and holiness. Thus this strong government will be established on a strong foundation of righteousness (Is. 9:6-7; 32:16-17).
The millennial government will be a Spirit-filled government.
Christ, being full of the Holy Spirit will rule the world with perfect wisdom and understanding. Thus His decisions and judgments will be made with absolute fairness and with righteousness. Isaiah 11:2-5 says of Him,
And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him,
The spirit of wisdom and understanding,
The spirit of counsel and strength,
The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
3 And He will delight in the fear of the Lord,
And He will not judge by what His eyes see,
Nor make a decision by what His ears hear;
4 But with righteousness He will judge the poor,
And decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth;
And He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth,
And with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked.
5 Also righteousness will be the belt about His loins,
And faithfulness the belt about His waist.
Mortals who work in the government will of course not be as righteous or as Spirit-filled as He, but they will have a perfect example to follow. And I’m sure that any mistakes that are made, He will quickly bring reproof and correction. Thus the government in the millennium will be run efficiently, and God’s will will be accomplished on the earth as planned.
