Praise for Clerks who Refused Gay Marriage Licenses

ows_143570351977984   I was thrilled to see in the Minneapolis Star Tribune today (July 1, 2015) that certain clerks in Kentucky refused to issue gay marriage licenses.  Clerk Kim Davis, in this article entitled, Fight for gay marriage turns now to clerks who defy Supreme Court, refuse marriage licenses, said, “It’s a deep-rooted conviction; my conscience won’t allow me to do that…It goes against everything I hold dear, everything sacred in my life.”

The article in the Tribune stated that some judges and clerks in Alabama and Texas have done the same, ordering their offices in the name of religious liberty and free speech to issue no marriage licenses at all.

Well, as the article goes on to say, anyone who works in public offices and does not adhere to the law of the country (including this new marriage law) can get in big trouble. Said Sam Marcosson, a constitutional law professor, “Two things can happen if a Kentucky clerk won’t issue a marriage license to a same-sex couple: They can resign, or go to jail.”

Linda Barnette did decide to resign, and she said in her resignation letter, that she is a “follower of Christ” and that she chooses “to obey God rather than man.”

Amen Linda! Way to go! This is exactly what the apostles said after they disobeyed the laws of the Sanhedrin: “We must obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29).

001And this tells me that if any law of man is contrary to a law of God, we as believers must not obey that law, because God’s laws are above any laws of man. In the case of this new same sex marriage law, this law is clearly in violation of God’s law of marriage. From the beginning when God created a marriage partner for Adam (male), He created Eve (female) (Gen. 2:18-25; read also Matt. 19:4).

Also in Romans 1:26-27 and in 1 Corinthians 6: 9-10, God clearly teaches to us that homosexuality is unnatural, shameful and definitely not according to His plan for humanity or for marriage.

Thus those who refused to issue marriage licenses to gay folks did right. As believers we too have a Christian duty to disobey any law that is contrary to the laws of God written in His Word. I feel so good about this and so proud of you who did not cave into the pressure of this new unjust law.

  1. James J. S. Johnson says:

So the article reports: “Well, as the article goes on to say, anyone who works in public offices and does not adhere to the law of the country (including this new marriage law) can get in big trouble.” Guess what! As Jude’s epistle reminds us, insulting God can get someone into a lot worse trouble! (Ask the last generation of folks who inhabited Sodom and Gomorrah — they can speak from experience.) And that doesn’t even reach the legal issue of where the boundaries fo the 14th Amendment are, as it has been recently “interpreted”.
