What is written in the “books” contain a record of every thought, word, and deed of every unbeliever who has ever lived—all who will stand before the great white throne. These records will provide evidence of their guilt and that they are deserving of eternal condemnation.
And I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds.
We will look at five verses that will show us this judgment.
Luke 8:17; Romans 2:16. In these verses we see that every hidden and secret thing will come to light. Thus every secret thought of the unbeliever will be recorded in the books and God will judge them.
Matthew 12:36-37. For the unbeliever, all their words will be recorded in the books, and they will give an account for them on the Day of Judgment. As for the believer’s words, their good words will be rewarded and their careless words will be forgotten—because they have been paid for by the blood of Christ (References for believer’s judgment: 1 Cor. 4:5; 2Cor. 5:8-10; Rev. 22:12).
Matthew 16:27; Romans 2:6-10. God will render to each man according to his deeds. He will give eternal life to those who have shown evidence of their salvation by their good works. And He will give wrath and judgment to those who have shown by their evil works that they are not saved.
Thus the judgment at the great white throne, on all who stand before Him, will be thorough and complete. He will shine His light on all their hidden sins. Nothing will go unpunished. And it has to be this way because God is holy and all of heaven is holy. And so no one will be given entrance into heaven that has a speck of sin in his life (Matt. 5:48; 1 Pt. 1:14-16).
But God is also just and fair; and the punishment that He gives to each one will be to the exact degree that he or she deserves—no more and no less. Therefore, according each ones sinful thoughts, words or deeds each one will receive either “many lashes” or “few [lashes]” (Luke 12:47-48; Matt. 10:14, 15; 11:22; Mk. 12:38-40; Heb. 10:29).
