The Sign of His Coming and the End of the Age — Matthew 24:3

The remark of Jesus toward the temple (Herod’s Temple)—that it would be completely destroyed (Matt. 24:2)—led to the disciple’s question of what would be the sign of His coming. They were anticipating that the kingdom of God would come very soon, in their lifetime. However, Jesus’ long response teaches us clearly that the years leading up to His coming would be very chaotic and troublesome; indeed, they will be the seven years of tribulation.  In fact, the verses in this context (Matt. 24:4-26) are a summary of the tribulation taught in Revelation (Rev. 6:1-18:24). Hence, because of this time-frame we must believe that His coming, spoken of in this Matthew passage, is of the second phase.

However, though this passage clearly speaks of the second phase of His coming, leading up to the millennial kingdom, it could be that Jesus may also be thinking of His coming for the saints in rapture just before the tribulation, for many of the signs of his coming, such as wars and famines and earthquakes, are already upon us.

Matthew 24:3

And as He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”
